Calculate Your BMI 

BMI body mass index is a measurement used to calculate a person’s weight relative to their height.  The BMI formula is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. The result provides an estimate of body fatness.  Online BMI calculators can be used to calculate your BMI values including corresponding weight status based on gender, height and weight.  Classification for BMI values for adults ranges from severe thinness < 16, moderate thinness 16 -17, mild thinness 17-18.5, normal 18.5 – 25, overweight 25 – 30, obese class l 30 – 35.  Being overweight increases the risks of developing serious diseases according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention CDC. Globally more than 1 billion people are living with obesity in 2024.

Numerous negative effects can result from being overweight including developing high blood pressure, heart disease ,type 2 diabetes, higher levels of cholesterol LDL which is considered bad cholesterol, stroke, gallbladder disease, increase risk of mortality, sleep apnea difficulty breathing ,mental illness, depression, anxiety Osteoarthritis joint pain, body pains resulting in difficulty in certain physical activities, poor quality of life.  Determining your BMI body mass index provides baseline metrics to identify body weight range. Generally a person should maintain a BMI of 25 kg/m2 but ideally individuals should check with their health care provider to determine if they need to make changes in their lifestyle in order to be healthier in 2024. BMI scales are instrumental when tracking weight providing individuals a baseline to determine ideal body weight.

It may overestimate body fat for athletes and for those who have muscular build as one pound of muscle is equal to 2 pounds of fat. Muscular people tend to be lean with less body fat while weighing more on the scale.
